Deputy Director, Legal Services
Job Description
The Deputy Director, Legal Services will serve as the principal legal advisor to the Council, providing expert guidance on all legal matters affecting the operations, policies, and strategic objectives of the organization. Key responsibilities include overseeing the drafting, review, and approval of legal documents such as contracts, agreements, and regulatory submissions; representing the Council in legal proceedings, negotiations, and stakeholder engagements; ensuring compliance with national and international legal frameworks, including constitutional provisions, statutes, and regulatory guidelines; managing the legal department’s operations, including staff supervision, workflow coordination, and resource allocation; advising senior management and the Board on legal risks, liabilities, and mitigation strategies; and collaborating with government agencies, industry partners, and legal professionals to advance the Council’s mandate in the leather industry. The role requires a high degree of professionalism, ethical integrity, and the ability to interpret complex legal provisions in the context of the Council’s operational environment.
Requirements
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university; Master of Laws (LLM) degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification is an added advantage; Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate; Minimum of 10 years’ post-admission experience in legal practice, with at least 5 years in a senior legal advisory role within a public or corporate entity; Demonstrated expertise in corporate law, commercial law, or regulatory compliance; Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to supervise and mentor legal staff; Excellent analytical, communication, and negotiation skills; Proficiency in legal research tools and software; Knowledge of the leather industry or public sector legal frameworks is desirable; Must possess high ethical standards and a commitment to public service.
