Science Officer - Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS)
Job Description
The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) is seeking a Science Officer to oversee the implementation of Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) frameworks under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol. The role involves coordinating ABS-related activities, including the development and review of national policies, guidelines, and regulations to ensure compliance with international agreements. The officer will engage with government agencies, research institutions, and private sector stakeholders to promote fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. Key responsibilities include conducting training sessions, providing technical advice to policymakers, and facilitating public awareness campaigns on ABS principles. The position requires collaboration with international bodies such as the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) and other regional ABS initiatives. The work environment is dynamic, involving fieldwork, stakeholder meetings, and office-based research and reporting.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Law, or a related field; Master’s degree is an added advantage; Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in environmental management, biodiversity conservation, or policy development; Strong knowledge of international biodiversity frameworks such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol; Excellent analytical, research, and report-writing skills; Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data management tools; Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams; Fluency in English (written and verbal); Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
