Laboratory Technician
Job Description
The Laboratory Scientists will be responsible for conducting malaria molecular surveillance activities, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing of Plasmodium falciparum isolates. They will analyze genetic data to track malaria parasite populations, identify resistance markers, and support the development of targeted interventions. The role involves maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring quality control in molecular assays, and documenting results in compliance with standard operating procedures. Scientists will collaborate with national malaria control programs and international partners to provide data-driven recommendations for malaria elimination strategies. Fieldwork may be required in high-burden districts to collect samples and conduct on-site testing.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, or a related field; minimum 3 years of experience in molecular biology techniques (PCR, DNA sequencing); experience with malaria diagnostics is highly desirable; proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Excel, R, or Python); strong attention to detail and ability to work in a high-pressure laboratory environment; familiarity with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards; willingness to travel within Rwanda as needed.
