The college commenced operations on October 1, 1997, with the Faculty of Medicine, addressing the urgent need for trained healthcare professionals in Tanzania, where access to quality medical education and healthcare services was limited. In its formative years, KCMU College concentrated on developing a strong curriculum and establishing itself as a center of excellence in medical education. The college was committed to evidence-based medical training and instilling a sense of service in its students. Although the initial intake of medical students was modest, the college quickly gained recognition for its educational quality and the competence of its graduates.
