Wildlife & Community Development Expert with national experience

Job Description

The Wildlife & Community Development Expert will implement an 18-month GIZ program in Tanzania’s Ruvuma Landscape, covering 42 villages across Liwale, Namtumbo, and Tunduru Districts. Key responsibilities include developing one District land use plan, 15 village land use plans (LUP), and community action plans (CAP), strengthening institutional capacity for wildlife management through organizational structure development, curricula and materials creation, and piloting 30 Malihai Clubs (environmental conservation clubs in schools and colleges). The role also involves supporting outreach programs for the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) and Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) through concept development, training materials, and pilot implementation in 30 villages. The expert will collaborate with district natural resource teams, local governments, traditional authorities, and conservation institutions to integrate human-wildlife conflict (HWC) considerations into land use planning and promote conservation-linked livelihoods. Work will primarily be conducted in rural Tanzania with travel to project sites, requiring strong cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills.

Requirements

University degree (e.g. master’s or equivalent) in wildlife biology or management, rural development, Community Development, or Natural Resource management; Knowledge of English C1 and Swahili C1; 3 years of professional experience in wildlife and natural resource conservation projects; 2 years of professional experience in community development projects in rural settings; 5 years of professional experience in human-wildlife conflict management projects in Tanzania; 4 years of professional experience in community outreach or environmental awareness programs related to HWC and wildlife management; 2 years of professional experience working with local governments and traditional authorities (3 out of 10); 9 years of professional experience in Tanzania, including 5 years in rural communities; Legal right to work in Tanzania; Residency in Tanzania required.
