WASH Emergency Officer (Refugee Influx)
Job Description
The WASH Emergency Officer will lead UNICEF's water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) response in refugee influx situations, ensuring rapid deployment of emergency WASH services. Primary responsibilities include coordinating with government partners, NGOs, and UN agencies to assess WASH needs, develop and implement emergency response plans, and monitor progress against agreed indicators. The officer will oversee the procurement and distribution of WASH supplies, manage a team of WASH staff and volunteers, and ensure compliance with UNICEF and international WASH standards. Key deliverables include timely reporting on WASH activities, coordination with health and nutrition sectors to prevent disease outbreaks, and capacity-building for local partners to sustain WASH services post-emergency. The role requires frequent travel to refugee settlements and emergency sites, often in challenging and insecure environments. The officer will work closely with UNICEF's Country Office and Regional Office to align emergency responses with broader humanitarian strategies.
Requirements
Advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Water and Sanitation, or a related field; Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in WASH programming, preferably in emergency contexts; Experience in leading WASH emergency response operations, including rapid assessments and implementation of life-saving interventions; Strong technical knowledge of WASH standards, guidelines, and best practices in humanitarian settings; Experience in managing procurement, logistics, and supply chains for WASH supplies; Excellent coordination and communication skills, with the ability to work under pressure in complex and dynamic environments; Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required; Knowledge of local languages (e.g., French, Swahili, Arabic) is an asset; Experience working with UN agencies, NGOs, or international organizations in emergency settings is highly desirable.
