Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultant

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Consultant will organize clinical sessions, including clinical cases, morbidity-mortality reviews, and literature reviews, with residents, medical officers, students, and other cadres at the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) to maintain its status as a training hub. The role involves leading and participating in community outreach activities for RMNCAH (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health) programs, such as high-risk pregnancy screening, obstetric scans, cervical cancer screening, and family planning. The consultant will deliver high standards of care in reproductive and maternal health, provide accompaniment and mentorship to clinical staff, and collaborate with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health on developing and implementing work plans and medical education programs. The position requires 24-hour coverage for emergencies, including performing normal and operative deliveries (e.g., Cesarean sections), managing gynecological cases, and overseeing gynecology clinics. Additionally, the consultant will participate in clinical teaching, mentorship, and capacity-building activities, assist with curriculum development, and contribute to grant proposals and reports for donors. The role is based in Kono, Sierra Leone, with an anticipated assignment length of at least 12 months.

MD or equivalent medical training and board certification as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology; minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience since registration with at least 6 months in a low-resource healthcare setting similar to Sierra Leone; experience and interest in providing clinical education, training, and mentorship to medical officers and residency programs; experience in advanced gynecological oncology and/or family planning programs is an asset; prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), Hepatitis B, and non-communicable diseases: clinical and program management experience strongly preferred; experience in public health and/or program management is a plus; proficiency in English and Krio is an asset; exemplary interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written; ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff; evidence of providing culturally sensitive and competent quality care in a stressful environment; proven ability to exercise good judgment and political astuteness; demonstrated ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected challenges; willingness to accept a standard of living that is clean and comfortable but simple; humility, curiosity, and commitment to tackling challenging problems; ability to live in Kono District, Sierra Leone full-time in shared accommodation.
