Painter ======= ##### Nanyuki, Kenya [Apply Now!](/jobs/apply/painter-110) ### **LEC JOB DESCRIPTION** #### **Department**: ​GE Department #### **Grade**: ​8 #### **Full/Part Time**: ​FULL TIME  40 Hrs Flexible rolling week #### **Location**: ​Nyati Barracks (ALL BATUK TRAINING AREAS) #### **Reporting To**: ​**Daily**: ​Charge Hand (Civils)  #### ​ ​ ​ ​ ​**Weekly**: ​Maintenance Manager #### **Generic description of duties**:  Performs a variety of painting and finishing tasks within a specific area, each with specific components. Work requires the use of hand tools. Works independently after receiving direction. Receives daily assignments or work orders. Guidance is available from Chain of Command for new or unusual situations. Employees are expected to be fully competent in all aspects of work and given general guidance, can complete work assignments to the required standard. #### **Core Competencies:**  1. Working Together #### **Main duties**: * Painting interior and exterior surfaces using varnishes, paint, wall fabrics, stains or sealers. * Mix and match paint, stain and other finishes to job specifications. * Signwriting using stencils, graphics and hand painted lettering.  * Preparing surfaces to be painted by washing them, filling holes and cracks with putty and sanding them until they’re smooth. * Reads work order or receive instructions from Chain of Command. * Maintains all equipment in a clean, safe and serviceable condition. * Inspects, maintains and correctly wears items of PPE specific to the task. * Keeps workshop tidy at all times especially at the end of each shift or working day. * Responsibility for the use of materials and tools issued for the task including the safe storage and security and protection from the elements. * Responsibility for delivering your own results and those of the team, keeping others informed of progress and possible problems. * Understands and carries out all requirements under Health and Safety for the task including reading, understanding and complying with the workshop risk assessment. * Interpret applicable rules and standards including BATUK standing orders, and all policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the Organisation. * Understands relevant UK, National and local laws, codes and regulations depending on work area. ##### **Secondary duties**: * Work is performed indoors and outside.  Outside work requires exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, hazardous traffic conditions, noise, fumes, odours, and gases; exposure to moving equipment and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, wet/humid conditions, high, open or confined spaces, intermittent vibration and noise.  Work requires frequent standing and walking and occasional bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping and lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees may be required (after sufficient training and experience) to carry out the duties of Working at Height, Confined Spaces and Asbestos competent person. * Understand customers’ and suppliers; needs and explore practical solutions with them. You manage expectations by explaining what is and is not possible. * Employees are subject to call-back during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and are required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.  * Committed to continuously developing your skills and those of other people. * Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the MLM. #### **Competences/qualifications/experience**: 1. ##### **Essential**: * Government Trade Certificate I (Painter/signwriter). * Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education * Served as a Painter for a minimum of 2 years. * Knowledge and Experience of both Industrial and Domestic and Commercial Painting. * Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures. * Principles and practices of supervision and employee development. * Planning ahead, setting realistic targets. * Work independently and perform duties with minimum supervision. * Be able to comply with relevant Regulations and Codes of Practice. * Able to work with changing priorities and uncertainty. 2. ##### **Desirable**: * Hold valid Kenya driving licence (Class B, C1 & C). * Understand and follow oral and written instructions. * Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel. * Policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the Organisation. * Principles and practices of supervision and employee development. #### **Training Requirements**: * Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK. * Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance. * Health and Safety at Work. * COSHH awareness. * Manual Handling. * First Aid & Fire. * Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Legionella and Asbestos training. * Erection and safe utilisation of scaffolding. #### **Other provisions:** May be required to work overtime: Yes May be required to work shifts: No  May be required to drive: Yes May be required to work unsocial hours: Yes May require working with children/VA: No May be required to work away from duty location: Yes #### **Application Process** * The candidates will be tested against **4 competences** as well as the testing of technical (job related) knowledge. The 4 competences to be tested are: * * Planning and Managing Resources * Analysing and Using Evidence * Managing Customers and Suppliers * Working Together * Candidate responses to each competence and technical (job related)-question will be evaluated against the following rating scale: **1** **2** **3** **4** **5** **6** **7** Not Demonstrated Minimal Demonstration Moderate Demonstration Acceptable Demonstration Good Demonstration Strong Demonstration Outstanding Demonstration No positive evidence and/ or substantial negative evidence demonstrated Limited positive evidence and/ or mainly negative evidence demonstrated Moderate positive evidence but some negative evidence demonstrated Adequate positive evidence and any negative evidence would not cause concern Substantial positive evidence of the behaviour Substantial positive evidence; includes some evidence of exceeding expectations at this level The evidence provided wholly exceeds expectation at this level 1.
