Associate WASH Officer

The Associate WASH Officer assists in providing professional technical support and guidance on Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) activities within designated Areas of Responsibility (AoR). The role may be based in Headquarters, a Regional Bureau, or a Country Operation. In Country Operations, the incumbent supports UNHCR in coordination with government authorities to assess needs and coordinate WASH services for refugees and host communities. This includes coordinating with WASH partners at site level, monitoring programme implementation, and ensuring adherence to UNHCR’s Emergency Handbook, WASH Manual, and Guidelines. The role follows a rights-based and community-focused approach, aligning with sustainable responses and inclusion principles. The incumbent is expected to mainstream environmental considerations and climate action into WASH activities while ensuring the sustainability of UNHCR WASH programmes. At Headquarters or Regional levels, the role involves facilitating technical guidance, capacity building, data management, and other requested support to operations.

Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English; six core UN competencies (professionalism, integrity, respect for diversity, and others); relevant technical experience in WASH programmes; experience in coordination with government authorities and partners; familiarity with UNHCR WASH standards and guidelines; experience in community-focused programme design and implementation; ability to work in multi-functional and interdisciplinary teams.
